Setting up your space

To begin your yoga journey, you will need a mat to practice on. There are many choices available when it comes to yoga mats, from different materials and thicknesses to varied textures and sizes. Please don’t let the process of selecting a mat overwhelm you so much that you delay starting, or research to the point where you still don’t know which mat to choose. Once you’ve settled on a mat that feels right for you, two yoga blocks will be very helpful for support and for “bringing the earth closer to you.” A folded blanket or small cushion can also be beneficial for extra comfort. Practicing yoga with your barefeet is best for support and stability.

It can be a personal preference to leave your mat rolled out between sessions, or, at the end of your practice, to roll it up and tidy your yoga space until your next time on the mat. I personally roll out two mats—one for me and one for my dog—because otherwise he settles in on mine and claims it as his own! Taking a few moments to tidy my space after my practice is my habit; it quietly signals to my mind that I made time for myself and honors that intention. Likewise, at the beginning of my yoga practice, it feels renewing and refreshing to unroll my mat and create a gentle, prepared space for what’s to come.
